I Know they made a sequel of 2001 a Space Odyssey, but the film 2010 was not very good at all. Roy Scheider bad choice, the Seven Ups part ll sure. I think 2001 A Space Odyssey should be redone. Since All the Stars Wars hype. There are billions of dollars to go around. Granted Star Wars is great for the lagging movie theater world. People are going to the movies again. It just takes a billion dollar film to do it.
I was never a big fan of Star Wars. I saw the first one in the movies like everyone else in ’77; like everyone else in my generation, but it did not grab me even at 15 yrs old. I liked Jaws much better 2 years earlier. George Lucas cashed out, and sold the franchise to Disney, for in the neighborhood of 4 billion. George Lucas life was pretty much star wars. If you look at his films as a director its mostly Star Wars related, but he was the executive producer of the Indiana Jones series, frankly he was more of a producer than a director anyway, and a very good one. My favorite non big budget movie of his I really liked was American Graffiti 1973, he was the Director, and based on life in the early 60’s in southern ,CA.
2001 A Space Odyssey, seemed very complicated, and confusing, but if you watch it it’s a pretty simple movie. The computer trying to take over the ship. Space movies are making a big come back, with the Oscar winning film like Gravity, and this years Matt Damon’s brilliant The Martian. and I really liked Intersteller with Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and vets Michael Caine, Ellen Burstyn, and John Lithgow.
The original 2001 A Space Odyssey, was a rare gamble. Where the stars did not drive the box office, it was the breath taking cinematography, the sets, special effects and Stanley Kubrick’s direction. We had 2 really unknown actors, b actors if you will not big stars at all. We had Keir Dullea as Dr. Dave Bowman, and Gary Lockwood, as Dr Frank Pool. MGM could have balked, and said we want Warren Beatty, and Sean Connery, or Robert Redford, and John Cassavetes. Maybe Clint Eastwood and Ryan O’Neal. Lots of Big name stars back in the 6o’s floating around. It would have been a great come back film for Marlon Brando, I think Natalie Wood would have been great ,or Jane Fonda.
Today a big summer blockbuster remake could star a who’s who of Hollywood. We have Bradley Cooper,Leonardo Di Caprio,Morris Chesnut,Matt Damon,Brad Pitt, Taye Diggs ect. Then we can add a female lead as one of the Dr’s. Jennifer Lawrence,Natalie Portman,Scarlett Johansson, or any of the up and coming new comers if you want to mirror the original. 2001 one you have to be careful, because you would have to out do Star Wars, and the original film to make it work, and it can’t have the slow pace as well. I think you might need an army of HAL 9000 computers to take over the ship to make it work.
